These are a few of my favorite things
I constantly am asked for advice on everything from my favorite handheld water bottle to therabands to CBD salve. To save everyone time, here are links and descriptions to just about everything I love. Remember! Everyone is different! These are products that I like and use. They may not be perfect for you. Running Gear:
Road Running Shoes: Shoes are very specific and the shoes I like, you may hate. I suggest assessing the heel-toe drop, level of cushion and amount of support offered by each shoe before ordering. Or, what’s best is heading to a big box shoe store where you can try on several pairs, run on a treadmill and get salesperson advice. Most box stores have great return policies, the internet is generally less generous. I offer consultations to get you started, reach out if you are interested. Below are my favorite road running shoes. I trend towards higher drop and more cushion to protect my achilles and to help my legs recover from long weekends on trails.
Brooks Ghost
Nike Invincible
Trail Running Shoes: The same caveats from above also apply here. Everyone is different and wants different things from their trail shoes. Generally, people like shoes that protect their feet from rocks, roots and other tough terrain. Trail shoes, therefore, should be more resilient and hopefully last you more miles. In years past, resilient also meant heavy but with more modern technology, protective trail shoes can also be reasonably lightweight. Here, I also go for a higher drop for my achilles. I have tried tons of different pairs and have many opinions, so ask away! What I currently use:
Dynafit Ultra 100
Hydration Packs: Lucky you, I recently helped my sister gear test hydration packs for Outside Magazine (linked here once published). So, now I have tons of opinions here as well. My go to packs:
Short Trail Runs: Salomon Adv Skin 5L, Black Diamond Distance 4
The Adv Skin is best for a snug fit and tons of pockets and the Black Diamond is best for pole storage. The Adv Skin has rough seams and may chafe. The BD bag did not feel quite as snug as the Adv Skin which made the bottles slosh.
Long Trail Runs: Salomon Adv Skin 12L, Black Diamond Distance 15
I swear I tested packs that are not Salomon or BD but these were my favorites. The Adv Skin has tons of accessible pockets and fits snuggly, the BD pack, again isn’t as snug but has amazing pole storage and clearly can hold enough for a rugged, backcountry 100 miler (both of these packs were worn by Anna and I on our Wonderland Trail attempt)
Handheld Water Bottles:
Salomon Active Handheld: by far my favorite. No frills. once it’s empty you can shove it in a pocket out of your way
Water Filters:
Katadyn 1L: very quick and easy to use on the trail, lightweight and takes up minimal space in any pack
Salomon filter lid: great for on-the-go water filtration. Don’t use this with electrolytes! Downfall is that the filter takes up a good amount of space in the bottle that would otherwise be filled with water. But, overall, good deal on a filter.
Body Glide:
Body Glide Brand
Squirril’s Nut Butter (don’t leave it in a cold car, it will become unusable forever)
CDB Salve:
Dragon Balm Super CBD
